This Is How Long You Need To Study For The SAT

This Is How Long You Need To Study For The SAT

You don’t want to start studying for the SAT too early and burn out long before exam day. You also don’t want to start too late and discover you need more work than you thought. So what is the perfect time frame?

The Ideal Plan

Keep in mind everyone is different. Everyone takes exams differently, remembers information differently and studies differently. However, taking into account some common factors every student faces, you can develop a plan and tweak it to fit your needs.

Are Full Practice Tests Dangerous?- Menlo Park ACT SAT test prep tutoring Services

At Mr. Test Prep, we cannot express often enough the importance of practice tests for preparing for and

performing well on the SAT or ACT. In fact, we even design our methodology around taking practice tests.

However, there can be a few instances when practice test cease to be beneficial.

Trouble Spots

Don’t let practice test lull you into complacency. Taking multiple practice tests, without stopping to study

your trouble areas won’t help you get better. You will have a better understanding of the test in general,

but you won’t improve your skills if you don’t spend focused study time on your most challenging material.

Understanding Mistakes

If you don’t go back and look at the practice exams in order to understand your mistakes, your time taking

practice test is not serving you. You need to work to understand why you got specific problems wrong and

what you need to do in the future to get similar questions right. Take the time to evaluate the whys of your

score, ask yourself:

• “Did I misunderstand the questions?”

• “Did I not know the appropriate material?”

• “Did I use the wrong strategy for finding an answer?”

Sometimes you will need to improve your test taking skills, while other times you will need to have a more

thorough understanding of the material.

Timing

Practice testing, especially taking full practice tests, requires a lot of time. If you use all of your time taking

practice tests you will not have adequate time to study in order to improve your skills. Plan out your

practice tests so that you can use them to evaluate your improvement. Space them out so that you can

study trouble spots and work to improve your score.

Improvement

Remember the ultimate goal of practice tests is to improve your score. This requires a thoughtful plan,

dedicated study time, and intimate knowledge of the exam. Practice tests will help you plan out your

studies and track progress, but they cannot entirely replace learning the necessary material. Make a plan

for your study that includes several practice tests, but isn’t overwhelmingly dominated by them. Find the

right balance between practicing and studying so that you feel confident about the format of the exam and

the material covered on the exam.

7 Amazing Brain Energizing Foods – Mr. Test Prep’s Los Altos ACT SAT test prep tutoring

When you are getting ready for an exam, more factors than just studying can influence the outcome. It can be tempting to snack on junk food while you are powering through study sessions, but empty carbs and saturated fats won’t help your score. Use these seven brain energizing foods to stay healthy and have the brain power you need to excel on the exam. Not only are these foods good for you, they are also delicious.

1) Avocados

Avocados have a myriad of health benefits. They are full of the good kinds of fat that help your brain. They also fill you up and help keep blood sugar down. Guacamole always makes an excellent study snack. However, if you are hungry for something sweet, try these recipes for non-traditional treats all baked with avocado as an ingredient.

2) Eggs

People have long been wary of eggs, especially the yolks for raising cholesterol. It turns out they don’t affect cholesterol in healthy adults and the yolk contains the majority of the powerful nutrients. Have scrambled eggs for breakfast, or keep hard boiled eggs around for an easy snack or salad topping.

3) Kale

Kale is packed with vitamin K and manganese.  According to Medical Daily, these nutrients are essential to brain health and help you feel focused and refreshed. Try roasted kale chips instead of potato chips.

4) Beets

Shape Magazine points out that studies have found that the nitrates found in beets increase blood flow to the brain. Increased blood flow to the brain leads to improved brain function. Try the delicious combo of beets chips and sweet potato chips, or drink some beet juice for a quick boost.

5) Seeds

Sunflower seeds and pumpkin seeds are a delicious salty snack that offer a variety of brain and health benefits. NaturalOn points out that Omega-3 fatty acids found in these seeds keep your brain healthy. Protein keeps you energized. Tryptophan releases serotonin, a brain chemical that fights anxiety. These little seeds also contain plenty of Zinc, which is well known for fighting viruses and for improving memory. This handy snack packs a powerful combination of benefits that will help you feel ready for the exam.

6) Poultry

L-tryosine is an amino acid in poultry. This amino acid encourages the brain to produce dopamine, which helps with memory and alertness. The next time you need a snack full of protein Snack Nation suggests Turkey Jerky.

7) Blueberries

Blueberries are delicious on their own, on cereal or in a smoothie. This superfood is known for its abundance of antioxidants which promote brain health. It’s not hard to enjoy a handful of blueberries everyday.

Power Foods

Choose what you eat carefully. Eating these power foods can take care of your brain and your body so that you feel alert and focused on exam day.

Duke Graduate • 18 Years Experience • Over 1500 Students

Mr-Test-Prep-Website-SAT - FREE TRIAL SESSION GAURANTEE

DOES YOUR CHILD NEED TO IMPROVE HIS OR HER STANDARDIZED SAT TEST SCORES?
ARE YOU LOOKING FOR A MASTER SAT TEST TUTOR IN THE NORTHERN CALIFORNIA BAY AREA WHO REQUIRES NO HOMEWORK AND GUARANTEES RESULTS?

I can help. Working with high school students for over 18 years, I have developed a philosophy supported by skills and techniques proven to result in superb SAT Tutoring and ACT test results.

We all move through the world with a self-image that sets what we believe we are capable of. This self-image often under serves our potential because it has been formed by a hodge podge of experiences, some encouraging and affirming, others anything but. The sense of self is malleable particularly in young people.

I work to expose their doubts and fears as more imagined than real and to convince them that they are much more capable than they realize. This serves the all-important self-image in a very powerful way. It not only results in vastly improved standardized scores but also recalibrates the belief in what’s possible.

As I work with my students, I never lose sight of my real objective. I may be helping them ace their standardized tests, but ultimately I am elevating more than just a score.

Learn More about Our Free SAT Trial Session Here
My program is not a traditional “one on one” tutoring situation. I have learned from my almost two decades of experience that there is a better and less painful way to prepare kids for these tests. Over the course of each 2-hour session, students meet with me for three private, one-on-one conferences (totaling about 20 minutes per student, each session),

The value of each 2 hour session is multi faceted:

  • Self timed sections in a group environment similar to the actual testing environment
  • Immediate correction of mistakes and tutoring to specific content or errors
  • Test taking strategies given as they arise during test taking, making them more relevant and easier to remember and apply
  • Confidence building with every interaction
  • Session by session readjustment of areas of focus based on observable progress

Investments of time and money vary from student to student. Regardless of ability, students that complete the number of sessions we agree to upfront have a great chance of meeting or surpassing their test prep objectives.

TESTIMONIALS

SAT Exam Tutorials Los Altos CAI had gone to over three different standardized testing tutors in the Bay Area since my freshman year. All left me unsatisfied, with mediocre results and my mother constantly reprimanding me for spending so much money on multiple exams and different tutors. On a whim, we tried Mr. Test Prep. Many of my friends had gone to him and raved about how his tutoring style is unique, effective, and definitely worth the money. They all succeeded in their standardized test preps, why shouldn’t I?
I can clearly remember Mr. Test Prep’s response when I said, “I’m no good at math and science.” He said, “Don’t think that way! These questions are easy if you think of them as easy. Let me break ‘em down for you…” Ever since then, the ACT has not intimidated me with the daunting math and science sections. His tricks to make sure I didn’t make any “silly” mistakes even increased my scores to near-perfection in the subjects that I was stronger in – reading, writing, and English! Additionally, the group testing environment was insanely helpful in practicing what to expect during test day. Mr. Test Prep’s unpredictable outbursts of songs and people’s sneezing and coughing inevitably allowed me to block out the irrelevant and focus on the test. I also still do his meditations today before a big event or test! They have assisted me greatly in becoming more centered, and have me diving into any task headfirst with steady hands and tranquility.
Not only did Mr. Test Prep increase my confidence in test taking, but he also helped boost my overall determination in conquering whatever may stand in my way – including math and science! The results of Mr. Test Prep’s tutoring are not merely numbers. If you are seeking someone who is more than a tutor – someone who is a role model, friend, and a hilarious mentor, then Mr. Test Prep is for you!

Michael is by far the best mentor I have ever had. With his help, I was able to raise my SAT score by 240 points, which ultimately allowed me to get into several of my dream schools, including Dartmouth and Brown. He doesn’t merely teach the right answers, rather he provides his students with the mental tools and strategies necessary to think critically. One of the most important tools he focuses on is confidence. Through genuine, personable mentorship and support, Michael elevates not only test scores but also self-esteem that will benefit your child beyond his or her college process. His tutoring style can best be described as process of elimination: constant practice with past SAT tests eliminates the fear of unfamiliarity of the test; one-on-one guidance eliminates the pressure to move at a pace other than your own; his smile and sense of humor eliminates the fear of making mistakes…and all that’s left is your child’s fullest potential. Michael saw something in me, from our first session together, and cultivated that spark and turned it into something great. I have gained so much more than just points on my SAT score from working with Michael and it is an opportunity that I am grateful for every day. I highly recommend Michael as a tutor whether it’s for SAT, SAT II, ACT or anything!

I would not be at the University of Michigan without Michael Romano. Plain and simple.
When I was in high school, I had about a 3.3 GPA. I was below the threshold for a lot of schools’ GPA standards, especially Michigan’s. The only hope I had of finding my way to a big time school like Michigan was to seriously differentiate myself on my standardized tests. Unfortunately, those weren’t going great either (I was scoring high, but not in the 99th percentile like I’d need to in order to overcome my GPA).
I took a Princeton Review SAT course before coming to Mr. Test Prep. I thought it made sense to try a cheaper option first, I could not have been more wrong. Princeton Review didn’t treat me like a person. I don’t think the instructor ever even knew my name. What was even worse was that my score didn’t go up one point. They used umbrella teaching techniques that tried to address the needs of an entire class at once. I don’t think it helped anyone very much.
I went to Michael for a free practice test and consultation. He looked over the mistakes I’d made on the practice, congratulated me on already being a high scorer, and then told me he could get me where I needed to be. 2200 or higher.
Well, I’m at Michigan now, and I can tell you that my GPA did not improve my senior year of high school. It was Michael’s tutoring that got me into the school of my dreams. It’s that simple. I’ve been accepted into one of the most prestigious writing programs in the country, and started my own game company, and none of that would be possible without the hours Michael spent on me, personally, one-on-one, making every painstaking point on every last practice SAT the most importing part of his life at that time.

Near the end of my third year at the University of Michigan, I got a message from Mr. Test Prep asking how I’d been (that’s right, Michael cares enough about his students that he checked in three years after I took the SAT and ACT). He was interested in my life at Michigan, the projects I’d been a part of, and the progress of my writing career. He cared about getting me here, and he cares about where I go from here, and I only know him because he was my SAT tutor.

The least I can do after receiving that kind of genuine support from Michael is share my story with you all. Mr. Test Prep can make a difference on your test scores, I think every review on this page is a testament to that, but what I want to make abundantly clear is that Mr. Test Prep can make a difference in your life, which goes far beyond the investment of time and money spent on his tutoring sessions.

3 Great Tips For Writing A Great Essay – Menlo Park ACT SAT test prep tutoring Services

Essays are an essential part of your college application process. Many schools encourage or require an essay for admissions. Not only will knowing how to write a great essay help you get into college, but it will also help you perform well throughout college. Writing is an essential part of higher education and you will be expected to know how to do it well. Here are three things you should do to write a great essay.

  • Create a Thesis Statement

You need to know what your essay is about and it should be clear to your reader. A thesis statement is a single phrase that plainly states the main idea of the essay. Creating a thesis statement will help you organize your entire essay. FastWeb points out that it is a good idea to decide if your essay is intended to “inform or persuade.” Knowing your specific topic and your overall goal will help you write a clear and concise essay.

  • Outline

Before you start writing, organize your thoughts. Creating an outline will help you know where to use your facts and examples to support your main points. You can gather catchy statistics or thought provoking questions for your introduction, write out your thesis and develop your supporting points. An outline will make sure that everything relates back to the thesis and that your main points are well reinforced. Once you have an outline complete, you can write quickly and efficiently, without rambling or injecting topics that don’t relate to the overall theme.

  • Proofread

When you are finished writing, proofread. Glaring typos and grammar mistakes will detract from even the most well written essay. You don’t want these simple mistakes to take away from your writing. It can be easy to miss typos and misspellings, especially if you have been working on the same essay for a long time. Make sure you complete your essay in time to step away from it overnight, or at least for a few hours. Then, go back and proofread it with fresh eyes. You can also have a friend or family member read your essay to look for any mistakes and make sure it communicates your thesis clearly.

Time

Essays require time. If you want to write a great essay, allow yourself time to develop a thesis, organize your thoughts in an outline and edit your work. When you do these three things, you will be able to write an excellent essay.

3 Great Test Prep Apps And How To Use Them- Santa Clara ACT SAT test prep tutoring

santa-clara-act-tutor-copyWe often look at our phones as a distraction, but they don’t always have to be. They can also be a useful study tool. The biggest advantage to using apps to supplement your test prep is that you almost always have your phone with you. If you are waiting for a few minutes here or there, skip social media and use a study app instead. Here are three apps that can help you make the most of your study time

Ready4 SAT

Ready4 SAT is a free app that offers realistic sample SAT questions in covering all of the subject areas. The app offers helpful explanations and tracks your progress in the different subject areas. This app offers you the flexibility to focus on the areas where you need the most improvement.

College Board Daily Practice App

The Daily Practice App comes directly from the makers of the SAT for free. This means the questions will be almost exactly like what you will experience on the test. The app also offers helpful explanations of the answers so that you can learn from your mistakes. The app provides one new question everyday so that you can set the simple goal of completing one practice question a day. You can also answer archived questions when you want to spend a little more time with the app.

SAT UP

SAT UP goes beyond offering sample questions and includes vocabulary games and other study tools to help you improve your skills. It also includes sample questions and allows you to track your progress. This app allows a little more personalization than other apps available. SAT Up can be downloaded for free, but offers in-app purchases if you want to use more tools.

Apps as Supplemental Tools

As you discover the best apps to study with, keep in mind that apps should supplement study and overtake it. Apps can offer helpful tools, but most do not offer helpful test taking strategies. They can also not replace taking full timed practice tests. Be sure to include time in your schedule to study for the SAT in more substantial ways than just using apps.

Santa Clara ACT SAT test prep tutoring

Mr. Test Prep gives his students the deep learning skills they need to perform well on a lifetime worth of tests. At his Santa Clara SAT Prep center, he helps his students overcome years worth of bad mental habits and poor confidence so they’re ready to take on the test and reach their maximum score potential. With a combination of one-on-one tutoring and group testing, Mr. Test Prep offers the best of both worlds: experience with the conditions of the test and focused, student-specific instruction.

Visit A College Campus Without Leaving Your Home!- Santa Clara ACT SAT test prep tutoring

santa-clara-act-sat-test-prep-tutoring-copy-3Choosing a college is a big decision. If you have a long list, or your favorites are far from home, you may not be able to visit all of your options. While visiting is one of the best ways to determine whether or not a college is right for you, there are many resources you can use to narrow your search.

Gather Information

Start by visiting a college’s webpage. Look at the departments you are interested in. Check out statistics and demographics, such as student to faculty ratios. Find out what resources, clubs, and organizations are present on campus. Learn about student housing and the social environment.

Virtual Tours

Virtual tours are also very helpful for seeing what the campus is like. Many universities offer virtual walking tours that offer 360 degree views of campus buildings and spaces. These tours are complete with videos and student guides. Check out YouVisit.com to experience in depth tours of many campuses throughout the United States.

Make Calls

Don’t be afraid to pick up the phone. One of the great things about campus visits is the opportunity to talk with students and faculty about the campus and programs. You can call colleges and make appointments to speak with academic advisors, recruiters and even students. The more contact you have with a variety people affiliated with campus, the more you can develop a feel for what the institution is like.

Start Early

A Great Return – Why Tutoring Means Long Term Rewards- Sunnyvale ACT SAT test prep tutoring

sunnyvale-act-sat-test-prep-tutoringStudents often use tutoring to help them achieve a short term goal: raise a grade, get through an exam, or catch up from behind. However, tutoring can achieve much more than just those short term goals. Tutoring can have significant long term rewards.

Time Management

Tutors offer important tools to help you achieve short term goals. These tools can help students throughout their academic career and beyond. One tool tutors offer is time management. Students find themselves behind or overwhelmed and turn to tutors for help. A tutor can help a student get caught up and teach time management skills so that the student doesn’t fall behind again. Learning how to keep track of dates, spread out work to meet deadlines, create a study plan and prioritize are all skills that will help you everyday.

Building Confidence

When facing exams, tutors impart confidence to their students. A tutor can help a student see where they excel and encourage them on an individual level that teachers may not be able to offer. A tutor can give students a greater sense of confidence about a specific subject or exam, or even more generalized self confidence. When students feel confident about themselves, they will feel less anxiety and will be more likely to perform well on exams or coursework. This sense of confidence can be lasting and can even help students perform well in higher education and their future careers.

Personalized Study Methods

Tutors can also help students discover their learning styles and develop study methods specific to their needs. Teachers cannot offer the individualized attention necessary to help a student discover their learning style. A tutor can take the time to find the best methods for learning for their student. When a student has developed excellent study methods, all of their studying will be more efficient and productive. Productive study time may mean that a student won’t have to spend as much time studying and will be able to more effectively engage with the material.

Long Term Tools for Success

Overall, a tutor can impart time management skills, encourage confidence, and teach personally effective study methods. These are the long term rewards that come with excellent tutoring. Don’t be afraid to use tutoring to achieve short term needs, but know that you are also gaining what you need to succeed throughout life.

Sunnyvale ACT SAT test prep tutoring

Mr. Test Prep helps every type of student—yes, even the shy ones—maximize their score potential. A lot of shy kids find the scrutiny of full one-on-one tutoring to be too intense, but at my Sunnyvale SAT Prep center, I create a safe environment that is perfect for kids who find verbal participation to be stressful. By combining group testing, with targeted instruction, shy kids can get the help they need in a way that works for their personality. No more awkward silences. No more pushy tutors. Just lots of practice and the guidance of an experienced educator.
